The Christopher Society

The Christopher Society was established to recognize significant contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal.

The word Christopher is from the Greek meaning Christ Bearer - one who carries Christ. Saint Christopher is believed to have carried the Christ Child across a raging river. He helped Christ on his journey. And just as Saint Christopher was unaware that he was bearing the Christ child through the dangerous currents, many are unaware of the countless Christ’s they carry each day through their generosity to the Annual Catholic Appeal.

Each year, the Christopher’s are invited to a dinner which recognizes them for their generosity and faithfulness.  The event is attended by our Bishop and includes a speaking program.  The speaking program features individuals closely associated with Diocesan ministries and programs.  Past speakers have included ministry directors, adoptive parents, Catholic School students, and others whose lives have been touched through generous gifts to the Annual Catholic Appeal.

It is through the generosity of the Christopher Society that those who are in need physically and spiritually are able to gather the strength required to embark upon their life’s journey.   It is with much gratitude that we thank our Christopher’s for being devoted and faithful patrons of the Annual Catholic Appeal.

This year’s dinner was held at the Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station. No matter the difficulties they, their families or the world is facing, these donors continue to give with compassion and grace, and, in doing so, enable our many ministries and programs to be the hands of Christ to so many in need in our communities. This past year, 615 families made the commitment to be Chri...

Donors' ACA Generosity Knows No Bounds
The Annual Catholic Appeal is thrilled to announce that two wonderful donors, the Rossi Foundation and the Padre Pio Foundation of America, have generously agreed to match 50% of every new donation that the ACA receives between September 12, 2022, through December 15, 2022.   This is the first time that anything like this has been done for the ACA and we are beyond appreciative. Ted and Ruth Rossi, founders of the Rossi Foundation, parishioners of St. Mary Church, Portland, have always dug deep into their pockets to support the ACA.  The Padre Pio Found...

Mom Knows Best: The Christopher Dinner
By Mary Ellen Mahoney Two hours before the Christopher Dinner was set to begin at the Water’s Edge Resort, in Westbrook, my staff and I were on location setting up for the event just as we had done for countless other Diocesan events. While the routine was familiar, the venue was new to us and it was my first Christopher Dinner as the Executive Director of the Office of Development. After the room was set, the microphone and video screen tested, I sat down and remembered my mother telling me on the very first day of nursery school, as I sat on the front steps of...
